I ordered an extra controller from Amazon and discovered that the left keypad was defective, in that it took a bunch of pressure to make the left-right-up-down buttons actually work. Notified Amazon about this and they sent a replacement immediately, along with a sticker to send the first one back postage free. All painless, and the new controller works just fine.
